Happy Shea Month!

August is Shea month in West Africa — when Shea trees are heavy with fruit! Millions of women collect the fruit after it falls and that is the first step toward making Shea butter.

The Shea fruit is tasty — sweet and succulent. In the picture above, I am eating one on my way to Ouagadougou a few years ago…

Happy Shea month everybody!

The Coolest Block

Trees everywhere bring great benefits! They are beautiful to look at and provide shade, and the great forests of the world play a vital role in regulating climate. So, I have been happy to be working to nurture our trees here in the East Village. Above, I am cleaning up a street tree pit as part of “the Coolest Block,” a program of the Lower East Side Ecology Center. Let’s help our trees everywhere!
