This year, the rains have been good as this lush green picture Fadilatou sent shows. Shea trees grow across the area — and indeed across all of Burkina Faso. Shea is so important that it is referred to as “women’s gold.”
Now, as the harvest ends, families store up the shea fruit they collect. It dries out and then they will use this year’s crop to make more shea butter in January!
Below I’ve included a song by Black So Man where he mentions how his mom made tchakpalo (locally made millet beer — sort of like kombucha!) in Bobo Dialosso. Listen for where he sings “en pays Bobo,” which means “in Bobo country.”
